The art of writing a “Hit Song”, and possibly a #1 Hit Song.
First thing to remember…anything goes. When you listen to the radio, it’s obvious…anything goes. We certainly will not be giving a lot of attention to critiquing subject matter in the songs submitted, as much as, song structure, the story, the melody, tempo, the all important hook, and who you think (and who we think) can take that song rising through the charts.
Very rarely does a song come to us ready for recording (but it does happen). To make great things happen and to get great results, it most all the time takes a great team. Professional advice will go a long way, when it truly comes from someone who has the necessary experience and who, like you, wants to create long term, life changing revenue from the advice/critiquing. Co-writing is important. Just watch CMT and view the writers credits at the end of each song- almost always 2 or more writers are listed.
We, The Song Ranch, Nashville, BMI, promise that we will listen to your song from the beginning to the end. As you may or may not know, unfortunately, when a song finally/ever makes it in front of some publishers, artist, A&R personnel, producers…it RARELY ever gets more than 10-20 seconds play time. They say that’s all they need. Why this is the norm, I’ll never know. Songs are complete from beginning to end. It ain’t a song unless it has a start and finish. When you listen to the demo songs that we are handling right now, you’ll hear that these songs (just like all hit songs on the radio) are complete hits from start to finish. All of them received several critiques to get where they are today. When one of our songs are picked up and kept (called, put on hold), we immediately fill that space with a new one, keeping what we believe is the top 10. All of these songs are being successfully pitched/plugged and played every day, hoping, and praying for big label professional cut. If we can’t get a song cut within 12 months, we have a reversion clause on every contract that returns the song to the writer to pursue other avenues.
Today the bridge is supposed to be one of the highlights to a “Hit Song,” (that is when a bridge is necessary). The bridge is usually well in the 1 ½ - 2 minute location of a song. Every song writers seminar expresses, that having a cool bridge helps. Yet songs still rarely make it to the second verse when given an opportunity at a pitch. Not so here. This will not be the case at The Song Ranch, Nashville, BMI.
We promise that we will listen to your song, from the opening note to the ending.
Every aspect of your song will be heard and critiqued. You’ll know when you receive your personalized letter or email, with your critique information, that your song was carefully listened too, from start to finish! Critiquing is not criticizing. You will always hear all the positives about the song, structure of the song, the hook, tags, verses, chorus, and melody/tempo.
Today is all about speed of information. This is very important.
Whomever gets there first has the best chance of cashing in. In our business, speed of information, is speed of getting that next Hit Song in front of the right people first. As a licensed publishing company in Nashville, TN, and registered with BMI, we get access weekly to artist and record labels looking for their next song project, along with their planned recording dates and locations. This kind of timely information is crucial to a Hit Song’s success. We will put out a list on this site to help you see what artist are cutting, when their cutting, and what type of songs they are looking for. This is a very important aid, when writers are considering a certain star to perform their Hit Song. This list changes as projects are complete. You are all invited back and encouraged to view this weekly. Writing songs is a great hobby, but an even greater career. Everyone would like to make money with their music. When/if you get that chance, its got to be right. Usually if you’re getting that chance, others are too. Your Hit Song has got to be ready! It must be the best of the group. We are going to listen to your song and get back with you, within 24-48 hours of your songs arrival to our office, we will get back to you either email, text, or US mail. Occasionally we will also be giving you a call on the phone. Be sure to give us a phone number.
The fee is 29.95 per song. Man, that’s cheap for a professional anything.
The type of information you’ll receive back and the chance to have a Nashville Publishing company listen to your song is valuable. If you’re like most writers, you have lots of songs in your catalog. I hear of writers creating songs one an hour, one a day, or one a week. That’s good. I’ve also heard of writers spending well over 100+ hours on one single song. All of these are today’s “Hit Song Writers.” Writing #1 songs takes skill, team work, major timing, luck, prayer, and more team work! It’s done every day and will continue to be done every day. Be a part of the next, “Hit Song!”
